250 entries, a judging panel of 24 key industry figureheads lead by Peter Saville and an awards ceremony with 400 guests, we are finally proud to announce the winners of the 2009 best of Manchester awards….

Joint winner of Music

Jayne Compton has been at the helm of Club Brenda for over a decade. This innovative, underground club night blends music, art, poetry and performance and is a platform for artists such as the performance poet, Chloe Poems and Grand Central vocalist, Veba. The success of Club Brenda inspired Jayne to set up Switchflicker Records, which was responsible for launching the Ting Tings’ stellar career (through the release of the hit single, That’s Not My Name). Switchflicker is currently home to folktronica favourites, Magic Arm. Jayne’s dedication to music and art drew particular praise from the judges, as did her upcoming Arts Council book, Strange Trees, a joint project with the artist Rachel Goodyear (also one of this year’s art nominees).

The exhibition runs from 23 July – 20th Sept at Urbis, Manchester

In the past year 18 year old Newcastle based singer/songwriter Beth Jeans Houghton has garnered a reputation as an antidote to the current crop of acoustic songstresses. With her alternative blend of experimental folk, Beth has been hailed by the NME as “a Joni Mitchell for the anti-folk generation.”

With influences ranging from Frank Zappa, Vashti Bunyan, Fourtet and Love, Beth has cultivated a sound that is truly her own. Since her first performance in August 06 Beth has played alongside a diverse collection of artists such as Bon Iver, Adem, Imogen Heap, Fionn Regan, Jeffrey Lewis, Scott Matthews, Bowerbirds, Josephine Foster, Woodpigeon, White Magic, King Creosote, Alasdair Roberts, PG Six, Dead Meadow, Voice of the Seven Woods, Tom Brosseau, St Vincent, Euros Childs, Diane Cluck, Jack Savoretti and Stephen Fretwell amongst others. Golden is out on Static Caravan, produced by Adem.

Sirconical has always been our favourite artist on the Twisted Nerve imprint, having been part of its originally bijou roster more or less from day one… His album has been in the making for at least a couple of years now, fusing his love of the thrumming folk and classic Hip Hop with an insatiable appetite for modern production techniques, electronics and complex rhythms, imbuing him with a sound that can veer from lazy, dusted breaks one moment to a hyperactive rhythmic attack Squarepusher would be proud of the next, while all the while harbouring an admiration for the kind of melodic transitions Plaid have imprinted on so many heads in the last decade…… “Waving At Planes” is a hugely charming and thoroughly disingenuous affair that takes shimmering blocks of electronic building material to construct deceptively simple compositions that range from the playful (‘Joulouville’) through to the epic (‘Gone’) and the downright unsettling (‘Rose’).

Psych pop charmer Magic Arm whose fragile melodies are a must hear and see. His music features everything from Beach Boy’s-influenced rockers, to ballads that would make Jose Gonzalez weep, but despite their potency, everything is branded with his melancholic humour, from lyrics to his emotive, solo version of LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Daft Punk Is Playing at My House.’

Imagine The White Stripes reversed with a synthesiser and massive
bass drum doing what they do best, playing effortlessly cool synth-pop. Influenced by the ever shrinking music world, the two piece of essentially just drums & vocals aided by their loops and an electric guitar, juggle their edgy pop hooks with Katie White’s Peaches style vocals & Tom Tom Club haunts. This will be their debut gig!

The beards
Kev has been recording music in one form or another since the age of 15..from playing with sound recorded on a 2 track to being in various bands. There are tapes of all this oddness that will never be heard by others.. Bought a Boss Digital 8 Track and started recording lo-fi experimental analogue electronic sounds treated via the 8-Track and various guitar pedals

Detour
Detour play guitar rock music, often instrumental and in a vein you might describe as post avant rock. Odd time signatures and strange build ups, with moments of pure noise and high energy. A cross between Tortoise, Godspeed, and CAN.

We spend our days huddled in a small cave, creating pretty sounds from whatever we find lying around. Keyboards, drums and bleeping machines sit side-by-side with lumps of wood and the finest primary school percussion in the land. We just add a little sprinkling of mountain dust, sit back and let the magic happen. Recently played by Phil Jupitus on 6Music’s breakfast show.
